Remembering 9/11: Five Years Later
September 11, 2006 by Glenn R. Cochran
Despite the overwhelming sadness in our hearts and the eagerness to put this truly terrible day out of our minds we must never forget those who died on 9/11/2001. Looking back now I realize I'm still deeply affected by the events that took place that day. Each and every time I see the video of the first or second plane crashing into the World Trade Center I am reminded of the horrors humankind is capable of inflecting on one another.
While five years have come and gone since 9/11/2006 seemingly not much has changed in the world. War continues to rage on in many locations, airports are really no more safe than before, and people like me continue to replay that day over and over again in our heads. Thinking about all the innocent people who lost their lives truly hurts.
As I make this entry in my blog I'm heading to Atlanta, GA for work and I'm flying on American Airlines flights. First leaving from San Francisco heading to Dallas and then onto Atlanta. Flying on this day, for me, is not something I was looking forward too. The long lines at the security checkpoint at the airport, the potential delays based on an elevated security status, and the inability to purchase and bring water with me on the plane. All these things seem like such big bummers to me. Thinking about it for a moment though I realize this is nothing compared to those who will be remembering loved ones and family members lost. For them, 9/11/2006 is surely much worse!
I'd like to wish all the families deeply affected by this tragedy my best wishes and most sincere apologies for their suffering. What I have lost by being slightly delayed or inconvenienced is clearly nothing by comparison. I only hope that through the experiences we've all gained from 9/11/2001 we can become better people. Learning from and admitting our mistakes, apologizing when appropriate, befriending those in need, and moving forward day-by-day despite the pathetic state of the world today.
Once I arrive safely in Atlanta, which I know I will, I'll post again so you too will now I'm safe.
